Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has announced the temporary closure of its primary runway 09/27 and secondary runway 14/32 on May 09, 2024, for pre-monsoon maintenance and repair work. The closure, scheduled from 1100hrs to 1700hrs, is part of the airport’s monsoon contingency plan to enhance runway resilience and ensure smooth operations, particularly during the monsoon season.

The airport, spread over nearly 1033 acres, will undergo timely checks and repair work on its runways, taxiways, and aprons to maintain operational continuity during the monsoon months. Specialists in engineering and airside teams will inspect the runway surfaces for wear and tear, strengthening the airside strip and ensuring safe landings and take-offs during monsoon.

Runway 09-27, spanning 3448m x 60m, and runway 14-32, spanning 2871m x 45m, will undergo maintenance to address concerns such as waterlogging and ensure durability and longevity of the infrastructure. The repair work will also include fixing any damage that may have occurred due to regular use.

CSMIA’s proactive approach to runway maintenance is part of its strategic contingency plan, aimed at addressing potential challenges posed by inclement weather conditions. The airport has leveraged technology to monitor maintenance activities and adhere to the scheduled completion time of 06 hours.

CSMIA has intimated all stakeholders six months in advance to ensure minimal disruption to flight schedules. The airport’s commitment to safety, efficiency, and reliability is evident in its infrastructure upgrades and proactive maintenance practices, ensuring a seamless experience for airlines and passengers.
