On April 25, 2024, Venice introduced a new scheme to manage the influx of tourists by charging day-trippers a 5 Euros ($5.3) fee for entry. Inspectors will be checking tickets at key entry points, primarily on weekends from May to July 2024.

Considered one of the world’s most beautiful cities, Venice is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a top tourist destination. However, it has been struggling under the weight of overwhelming crowds. The Access Fee tickets will be required on 29 busy days, primarily weekends from May to July, encouraging day-trippers to visit during quieter times.

Venice Access Fee Calendar
The days in 2024 when the Access Fee is applicable, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., are marked in red.

The access fee is not charged from 4.00 p.m. to 8.30 a.m.

The Venice council has launched an online platform allowing you to prepay if you’re visiting for the day.

The Access Fee is not due for those passing through Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto or Stazione Marittima, without accessing the Ancient City and for those who need to reach the San Giobbe landing stage if you are travelling from Piazzale Roma to Santa Lucia Station via platform 1.

Those who do not pay will face fines ranging from 50 to 300 euros, but authorities have said they don’t expect penalties to extend beyond that or to include jail time. Visitors will be able to pay in advance or pay once they arrive at key access points such as Venice’s Santa Lucia train station.

Exemptions

Registering and obtaining the appropriate exemption voucher is required to benefit from the exemption. Residents of the Municipality of Venice and individuals born in the Municipality of Venice are excluded from paying the access fee: they are not required to obtain the exemption voucher and can prove their exemption status by presenting a document certifying it. Minors under the age of 14 are excluded from the payment of the access fee: to prove their age, if it is not apparent, the presentation of an identity document is accepted as sufficient proof. Holders of the European Disability Card and their accompanying person are entitled to the exemption status on presentation of the Disability Card, and no registration on the portal is required. Members of the Armed Forces and the Police (including the Fire Brigade) are entitled to the exemption status on presentation of their service card. More…

The pilot scheme will be evaluated to determine its effectiveness, including potential limits on daily tourist numbers. This initiative is particularly important for Venice, which has been experiencing a decline in residents due to overtourism, impacting historic neighbourhoods and essential services.
