The Italian Ministry of the Interior announced on May 31, 2024, that Italy’s national land, sea, and air borders will be temporarily subject to controls in the run-up to the upcoming summit of the Leaders of the G7 Member States.

From June 5 to 18, 2024, the Schengen Agreement on the abolition of border checks between EU member states will be temporarily suspended at Italy’s borders. This measure is in preparation for the G7 summit, which Italy is hosting from June 13 to 15 in Borgo Egnazia, Puglia.

The G7 is an informal forum that brings together Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The European Union also participates in the Group and is represented at the summits by the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission.

The reintroduction of border checks aims to ensure security and smooth operations during the high-profile event.
