The United States is set to establish a new consulate in Bengaluru, with US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti announcing that it could open as early as January 2025. Speaking at an interactive session organized by the US-India Business Council (USIBC), Garcetti emphasized the significance of this development, calling it a fulfillment of a longstanding promise.
“We are committed to seeing our commitment to opening up the Bengaluru consulate, hopefully in January,” Garcetti remarked. He noted that Bengaluru, a major Indian city, currently lacks a US consulate, despite hosting the Foreign Commercial Service as a precursor to this initiative.
At present, the US has consulates in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, and New Delhi. The Bengaluru consulate will be part of a larger expansion plan, which also includes a new consulate in Ahmedabad.
The new consulate is expected to benefit thousands of students, tech professionals, and entrepreneurs who previously had to travel to Chennai or Hyderabad for visa-related services.
