Tamil Nadu has consolidated its position as one of India’s most dynamic tourism markets, driven by record growth in arrivals, major infrastructure upgrades, and a structured policy framework designed to boost competitiveness and global visibility.
Growth Indicators
In 2024, approximately 1.4 billion tourists travelled globally, an 11 per cent increase from the previous year. In India, foreign tourist arrivals rose from 8.15 million in 2022 to 19.25 million in 2023. Domestic tourist arrivals in India also increased from 1,731 million in 2022 to 2,510 million in 2023. Similarly, in Tamil Nadu, foreign tourist arrivals grew from 0.14 million in 2022 to 1.17 million in 2023. Domestic tourist arrivals increased from 218.58 million in 2022 to 286 million in 2023. These statistics highlight the growing interest in tourism among people.
Tamil Nadu’s Tourism Wealth
Tamil Nadu is rich in natural beauty. It has a 1,076-kilometer-long coastline from Pulicat Lake to Kanniyakumari, which is the second-longest in India, accounting for over 13 per cent of the country’s total coastline. The State is home to scenic hill stations like Ooty (the “Princess of Hills”), Kodaikanal, Yelagiri, Kolli Hills, and Yercaud. It also features many waterfalls such as Courtallam and Thirparappu. The State’s divine tourism centers include the Thanjavur Big Temple, GangaikondaCholapuram, Mamallapuram Shore Temple, Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple, Chidambaram Nataraja Temple, SrirangamRanganathaswamy Temple, and the six abodes of Murugan. Additionally, sanctuaries like Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, and Point Calimere Wildlife are major attractions that boost tourism.
Celebrating Tamil Nadu
Every year, the World Tourism Day is celebrated on September 27 and to commemorate this in 2024 the Director of Tourism organized a special tour called “Discover Tamil Nadu” to Mamallapuram, Thanjavur, Rameswaram, Madurai, and Chettinad (Sivaganga).
Major Festivals in Tamil Nadu
Various festivals are held annually, attracting both domestic and international tourists. These include the Madurai Chithirai Festival, summer festivals in Yercaud, Kodaikanal, and Jawadhu Hills, the Saral Vizha (monsoon festival) in Courtallam and Suruli Falls, the Valvil Ori Festival in Kolli Hills, and the Pongal Festival.
Indian Dance Festival at Mamallapuram
From December to January annualy, the famous “Indian Dance Festival” is held in Mamallapuram. For a month, Artists from all over India perform various forms of rich Indian classical dance. Thousands of tourists, both from India and abroad, visit historical Mamallapuram to witness this spectacular festival. Other events like the International Balloon Festival in Thiruvidandai and the International Kite Festival also attract tourists.
Tamil Nadu’s strong infrastructure, including 4,000 km of railway lines, extensive road networks, major ports (Chennai, Thoothukudi, Ennore), 17 minor ports, and international airports in Chennai, Madurai, Trichy, and Coimbatore, as well as domestic airports in Salem and Thoothukudi, significantly support the growth of the tourism sector.
MuththamizhArignarKalaignar’s Foreign Travel and Tourism Growth
In 1970, during a trip to the US for eye treatment, then Chief Minister MuththamizhArignarKalaignar also visited Switzerland, a country known for its prosperous tourism. This inspired him to develop similar tourism facilities in the naturally beautiful state of Tamil Nadu. Upon his return, he established the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Board in 1971.
Through this board, he built art galleries and cultural treasures across the State to boost tourism. These include Valluvar Kottam in Chennai, the Silappathikaram Art Gallery in Poompuhar, the Kattabomman Fort in Panchalankurichi, the statue of Thiruvalluvar at Kanniyakumari, and the Valvil Ori statue in Kolli Hills. He also erected statues and memorials for freedom fighters and Tamil scholars, making them beautiful tourist attractions. From 1974, he initiated tourism trade exhibitions at Island Grounds in Chennai, which later expanded to major cities like Madurai and Coimbatore.
Tourism Development under the Dravidian Hero’s Rule
Since assuming office in 2021, the Dravidian hero, the Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru. M.K. Stalin, has continued MuththamizhArignarKalaignar’s legacy by making significant contributions to tourism development.
He established the Keeladi Museum to showcase the 5000-year-old Tamil culture discovered through excavations in Keeladi, Sivakalai, and other sites. He also built a massive Jallikattu arena near Alanganallur in Madurai, commemorating the traditional sport.
At Kanniyakumari, he initiated the construction of India’s first fiberglass sea bridge, costing Rs. 37 crore, to connect the 133-foot tall Thiruvalluvar statue with Vivekananda Rock. He built the world-class Kalaignar Centenary Library in Madurai for Rs. 210 crore. Similarly, the Periyar Library and Science Centre in Coimbatore is being built for Rs. 300 crore, and the Kamarajar Library and Science Centre in Trichy for Rs. 290 crore. He has also installed statues for historical figures like VeerapandiyaKattabomman, the Maruthu brothers, V.O. Chidambaram, and social reformers like AyothidasaPandithar and Rettamalai Srinivasan in Chennai, thereby promoting cultural tourism.
A 3D laser show has been introduced at the Thiruvalluvar statue in Kanniyakumari at a cost of Rs. 11.98 crore. The Valluvar Kottam in Chennai has been renovated for Rs. 80 crore, with laser light shows on the single-stone chariot mesmerizing visitors. Work is underway to develop dams and reservoirs as tourist spots, with projects at Ponniyar and Chittar dams costing Rs. 8.56 crore. The Hogenakkal Falls area in Dharmapuri district was developed as a tourist destination for Rs. 17.58 crore and was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister on November 26, 2024.
Muttom Beach and Thirparappu Falls in Kanniyakumari district have been upgraded for Rs. 7.15 crore. Renovation of the Poompuhar Sculpture Art Gallery, costing Rs. 23.60 crore, is 85 per cent complete. Tourism facilities at Courtallam Falls are being improved for Rs. 11.35 crore. The Pichavaram Boathouse in Cuddalore is being upgraded into a multi-facility tourist spot for Rs. 14.07 crore. New viewpoints are being established and existing ones improved at major tourist spots across Tamil Nadu for Rs. 11.46 crore. The entrance complex of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, GangaikondaCholapuram Temple, will be upgraded with various facilities at a cost of Rs. 5 crore. Landscaping and other tourist facilities in Yercaud are being improved for Rs. 9.70 crore. Development projects are also underway at Dhanushkodi in Ramanathapuram district (Rs. 6.50 crore), Ooty lake (Rs. 4.80 crore), and beaches in Sothavilai,Kovalam (Kanniyakumari),and Kayalpattinam (Tuticorin) for Rs. 3.07 crore.
Awards for the Tourism Department
The Dravidian Model Government, under the leadership of the Hon’ble Chief Minister, has won several awards for its tourism development efforts:
- The “Award for Promoting Temple Tourism” at the International Tourism Mart and Travel Awards in New Delhi.
- The India Today Tourism Survey Awards 2021 gave the “Best Hill Station” award to Coonoor and the “Most Scenic Road” award to Kolli Hills.
- The Pacific Area Travel Writers Association awarded Tamil Nadu as the “Best State for Spiritual Tourism.” The Outlook Traveller Awards 2022 gave a silver award to Coonoor for “Best Mountain Views.”
- The “Best Tourism Minister of India 2023” award was given to the Tamil Nadu Tourism Minister.
- The Japan Tourism Expo Award in Osaka gave a silver award for “Best Heritage Site in India” to the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department for the Thanjavur and GangaikondaCholapuram temples.
- The Pacific Area Travel Writers Association awarded Tamil Nadu with the “International Travel Award for Cultural Site” at a ceremony in Berlin on March 6, 2024.
- The Dravidian Model government’s tourism department shines as one of India’s best, garnering numerous accolades.
Tourism Village Awards
- The villages of Ullada in Nilgiris district and Vettaikaranpudur in Coimbatore district received the “Best Tourism Villages” award in New Delhi on September 27, 2023.
- For the year 2024, the villages of Keeladi and Melkalingampatti in Namakkal district received the same award from the Union Ministry of Tourism on September 27, 2024, in New Delhi.
Tamil Nadu Medical Value Travel Summit 2025
Under the guidance of the Hon’ble Chief Minister Thiru. M.K. Stalin, Tamil Nadu Medical Value Travel Summit 2025 was successfully conducted by the Dravidian Model Government’s tourism and health departments in Chennai on April 4-5, 2025, earning much praise.
Tamil Nadu Tourism Policy – 2023
To enhance Tamil Nadu as a tourist destination, increase tourists’ length of stay, attract foreign currency, and improve facilities and infrastructure, the Hon’ble Chief Minister Thiru. M.K. Stalin released the Tamil Nadu Tourism Policy – 2023 on September 26, 2023—a first in the State’s history. Following this, many tourism development projects are being implemented across Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation’s Achievement
Thanks to the tremendous encouragement from the Honorable Chief Minister, the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation achieved a huge milestone in 2024 by earning Rs. 28.69 crore more revenue than in previous years. From May 2021 to January 2025, the corporation achieved a massive revenue of Rs. 129.28 crore through its 26 hotels and online booking services for all tours.
By upgrading its tourist centers and creating necessary facilities for visitors, the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department, with the encouragement of the Hon’ble Chief Minister Thiru. M.K. Stalin, ensures that both domestic and international tourists can easily visit, stay comfortably, and leave feeling rejuvenated and proud. The Dravidian Model government’s tourism department continues to earn praise and shine as the best in India.
