Thailand to offer longer stays for visitors, students, ‘digital nomads’

Thailand’s government announced on Tuesday the approval of new visa promotions aimed at attracting more tourists. These include visa-free and visa-on-arrival schemes, extended stays for students, and reduced compulsory health insurance for retirees.

Starting June 01, 2024, Thailand will allow travellers from 93 countries to stay for periods of up to 60 days, an increase from the current 57 nations, government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke announced. Additionally, the cabinet approved visa-on-arrival for 31 countries, up from 19 previously.

Destination Thailand Visa (DTV): A Five-Year Stay for Digital Nomads

For those looking to work and explore tourist destinations, a new five-year visa, called the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), will be available. DTV allows a stay of up to 180 days, with a visa fee of 10,000 baht, valid for five years. The stay can be extended once for another 180 days with an additional fee of 10,000 baht. Previously, visitors were entitled to only two 30-day stays.

This measure targets digital nomads, remote workers, and freelancers, as well as those interested in activities such as learning Muay Thai, cooking, sports training, medical treatment, seminars, and arts and music events. They can learn and tour places, said Chai.

Easing Post-Graduation Employment Opportunities

Foreign students pursuing bachelor’s degrees or higher with a Non-Immigrant Visa (ED) will find it easier to stay in Thailand and seek employment after graduation. They will be allowed to extend their stay for one year to search for jobs, travel, or engage in other activities, provided they obtain certification from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation. Currently, there are about 40,000 such foreign students in Thailand.

Health Insurance Requirements Reduced for Long-Term Visitors

For visitors aged 50 or older seeking long-stay visas, the requirement for health insurance coverage has been reduced from 3 million baht to 440,000 baht (400,000 baht for inpatient treatment and 40,000 baht for outpatient coverage). This change will be effective from September to December.

Furthermore, the cabinet approved the expansion of e-visa application services at Thai consulates and embassies from 47 to 94 locations, starting in September.
