In early November, StarDream Cruises brought together travel trade media from across India for its ‘Let us Reconnect on the Genting Dream’ programme. The initiative offered a stellar firsthand encounter with the majestic ship, a scenic onshore excursion to Phuket, and the opportunity to experience an extensive range of onboard facilities and curated offerings. The three-night sailing marked my return to the Genting Dream, and it genuinely felt like reliving the dream all over again.
Returning to the Genting Dream, the flagship of StarDream Cruises, felt almost like revisiting an old friend. My first voyage was a high-seas sailing trip in Singapore in 2022, a time when post-pandemic protocols still shaped travel. This time, on the three-night Singapore–Phuket itinerary, everything unfolded with remarkable ease. The sense of freedom was refreshing, almost symbolic of how far travel has progressed.
Singapore itself, vibrant and immaculate, impressed me yet again, along with Changi Airport, which continues to stun both first-time and frequent visitors with new attractions. At the Marina Bay Cruise Centre, a more streamlined check-in process offered a promising start to the voyage. The anticipation built steadily as I moved through the formalities, eager to step aboard and return to the familiar comfort of an ocean-view balcony stateroom overlooking the open sea.
A Familiar Journey with Renewed Wonder
The Genting Dream is undeniably majestic, a grand floating city where luxury, entertainment, and Asian hospitality travel together in harmony. The ship’s striking hull artwork and expansive decks command attention from the moment you board, setting the mood for an immersive voyage.
My balcony stateroom carried the charm of a well-appointed hotel room. Sleek interiors, a spacious bed, thoughtful amenities, and adequate storage made it a welcoming retreat. The private balcony, however, was its true centrepiece. More than 70 percent of the staterooms on Genting Dream feature balconies, along with over 100 connecting rooms ideal for families and groups.
Personally, a cruise feels incomplete without a balcony. It becomes my private theatre, with nature as the performer. I enjoy watching the horizon soften into the sky, spotting pelagic birds, observing fishing boats tracing their routes, and occasionally searching for a distant deckhand waving from a container vessel. I still wait for the day when flying fish, dolphins, sharks, or whales break the surface before me. The balcony remains a quiet place of reflection and wonder, a space where the voyage feels truly alive.
Life on Genting Dream: Eat, Sleep, Play, Enjoy, Repeat
On the Genting Dream, there is truly no room for boredom. The ship is a vibrant mix of Indonesian, Indian, Malaysian, Chinese, and Singaporean guests, with a crew that mirrors the same diversity. Indians alone account for nearly 30 per cent of average sailings, making the environment feel both lively and familiar.
From my wanderings around the ship, I discovered that the lobby on Deck 6 serves as its energetic core, where live bands perform to an appreciative audience. The atmosphere is electric, setting the pace for the entertainment that unfolds across various decks. Spirited bingo sessions, a bustling casino, and a lively video game arcade draw crowds of all ages. Evenings bring the Red-Carpet Gala, an elegant affair where guests dress their finest, walk the carpet, and enjoy a moment of sophistication and glamour.
When night descends, the iconic Zodiac Theatre becomes the centre of entertainment. Each evening features world-class productions with singers, dancers, acrobats, illusionists, and a mix of performance styles ranging from ballet sequences to Chinese opera and Bollywood-inspired themes. These shows are truly theatrical celebrations at sea.
For adrenaline seekers, the Genting Dream offers the High Elements Rope Course, culminating in a thrilling 35-meter zipline that extends over the side of the ship. There is also a rock-climbing wall, a full-size sportsplex with basketball, mini golf, a life-size chessboard, and a waterslide park featuring six slides of varying thrill levels. The Genting Dream is incredibly family-friendly. There is the Little Dreamers Club, a vibrant, supervised space for children aged 2 to 12.

A World of Flavours at Sea
Dining on Genting Dream is curated with precision, ensuring that every palate finds something satisfying. Three inclusive restaurants are part of the cruise fare. The Lido, on Deck 16, offers international favourites, as well as Jain, Indian vegetarian, and Indian non-vegetarian (Halal) options. Dream Dining Upper, on Deck 8, features a semi-Western buffet. Dream Dining Lower, on Deck 7, serves a Chinese set menu, particularly popular among East Asian guests. The ship also offers a variety of bars and lounges, each with its own character, from poolside relaxation to intimate cocktail settings.
A point to note is that handling more than 3,000 passengers for three meals a day is no simple task, yet the system operates with impressive efficiency. Even during peak hours, seating is managed with minimal waiting. However, this level of efficiency and professionalism was evident throughout the journey, from the boarding and disembarking formalities to the rooms, lifts, security, game zones, and excursions, all of which can only be described as truly superlative.
Moments that Become Memories
Cruising becomes infinitely more joyful when shared with family and friends, a spirit our group embodied, enjoying a balance of shared experiences and personal adventures. The sports and recreation deck is a happening place on the cruise. We played cricket on a windy deck, an unforgettable and amusing moment. During the time on the ship, some of us tried pickleball, others relaxed at the pool, and a few found peaceful moments jogging and strolling along the promenades. The evenings took us to spectacular Zodiac Theatre shows and the lively Foam Party at Zouk Beach Club, located at the stern beneath the open sky. Dining together also made for some of our best bonding moments. Whether enjoying Dream Dining on Deck 8, comfort meals at The Bistro, or pizzas at the Blue Lagoon, each meal carved a lasting memory.
Effectively, every individual in our group discovered something personal, whether it was indulging in rejuvenating therapies at Crystal Life Spa, seeking thrills at the Waterslide Park, feeling the rush on the zipline overlooking the open sea, or simply enjoying long conversations over a meal or coffee. This is the true charm of a cruise holiday: it adapts gracefully to every mood, interest, and age group.
The Phuket Experience
Our port day in Phuket was nothing short of enchanting. After disembarking at Phuket Port, we travelled to the Patong Beach area, where some explored independently and others in groups. The eight-hour excursion offered a balance of activities, dining, and exploration.
I was drawn to the vibrant beach atmosphere, the rhythmic waves, parasailing adventures overhead, a breathtaking sunset, and an energetic Zumba session unfolding right on the sand. While many chose to browse the Jungceylon Mall or shop around the bustling streets, I took the opportunity to reconnect with a DJ friend at Club Bollywood.
Dinner was the highlight of the excursion at Kan Eang, the acclaimed seafood restaurant near Chalong Pier. Known for its fresh catch, authentic Thai flavours, and sweeping views of the Andaman Sea, the dining experience was further elevated by a generously sized, flavourful Thai-style Asian sea bass that truly stood out. Returning to the port, the Genting Dream stood glowing in its night-time splendour, a sight that perfectly drew a curtain to our Phuket chapter.
