Polar Latitudes Expeditions has announced the addition of a new expedition vessel, Discoverer, to its fleet, which will begin sailing Antarctic voyages from the 2026–27 season.
The vessel, previously known as Exploris One, will join the company’s Antarctica programme, replacing its current ship, Seaventure. The move marks a strategic shift as Polar Latitudes transitions from chartered vessels to owned ships, enabling greater control over expedition planning and onboard experiences.
Commenting on the development, Anders Kristensen, Chief Commercial Officer, said, “By replacing a chartered vessel with one that we own, we strengthen our ability to shape the expedition experience from start to finish. This allows us to refine every aspect of the journey, from expedition planning to onboard learning, ensuring travellers experience Antarctica in the most immersive way possible.”
Built at Finland’s Rauma shipyard, Discoverer has a long legacy in polar exploration, having previously sailed as Silver Explorer and Prince Albert II. The ship underwent a major refurbishment in 2023, with upgraded guest accommodations, modernised systems and redesigned public spaces. Further enhancements are planned ahead of its Antarctic debut.
From the 2026–27 season, Discoverer will operate all scheduled Antarctic departures previously planned for Seaventure, with guests sailing in equivalent cabin categories. The addition will also enable the company to expand its Antarctic programme, including more sailings during peak travel periods and its flagship Crossing the Antarctic Circle itinerary.
Beyond Antarctica, the vessel will operate voyages for sister brand Heritage Expeditions, exploring remote destinations. In early 2027, Discoverer is expected to navigate the Chilean fjords and expand the company’s footprint into Patagonia.
The expansion comes amid rising interest in expedition cruising among Indian travellers, particularly in remote destinations such as Antarctica and the Arctic. Polar Latitudes aims to offer immersive, small-ship experiences focused on wildlife, exploration and responsible travel.
Founder John McKeon said, “We have had many successful seasons with Seaventure, and we are grateful for the journeys we have shared. At the same time, Discoverer represents the next step in our long-term vision of building one of the most comprehensive expedition cruise programmes in the industry. There is much more to come.”
