Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reiterated the government’s commitment to improving “Ease of Doing Business” and “Ease of Living,” while rejecting media reports suggesting that the Centre was considering imposing a cess, tax or surcharge on foreign travel.
In a social media post, the Prime Minister stated that the report was “completely false” and said there was “not an iota of truth” in the claims.
He further clarified that there was no proposal under consideration to impose any restrictions or additional levies on outbound foreign travel.
The clarification came after a media report claimed that discussions were allegedly underway regarding a temporary levy on foreign travel amid concerns linked to global tensions, higher crude oil prices and rising import costs.
The report had suggested that such a measure, if implemented, could remain in effect for a limited period and would contribute directly to the Centre’s revenues.
Following the Prime Minister’s response, the publication withdrew the report and removed the related post from its social media platforms.
