Nigeria to automate e-Visa process for faster and hassle-free short-stay approvals

Abuja, Nigeria

Nigeria is set to implement an automated electronic visa approval and issuance system to streamline travel and business entry into the country, according to the Minister of Interior.

The new system is designed to eliminate long wait times at entry points and reduce dependence on intermediaries who facilitate visa processing. Under the proposed plan, travellers can apply online for short-stay visas, with approvals expected within 24 to 48 hours. Once granted, the e-visa will be sent directly to the applicant’s email, removing the need for a physical visa sticker at the airport.

Announcing the development on Platform X, Olubunmi Ojo, Minister of Interior, Federal Republic of Nigeria, stated, “Today, I presided over a meeting on Nigeria’s new visa policy, the Nigeria Visa Policy 2025 (NVP 2025), alongside the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nanna Nandap. The proposed visa policy aims to enhance the ease of doing business, boost tourism, and strengthen bilateral and multilateral relations with other countries. In the proposed policy, we introduce a more streamlined and efficient visa approval process, including the electronic visa (e-Visa) as a separate channel for processing and obtaining Nigerian visas.”

He further emphasised the government’s commitment to modernizing the visa system, adding, “As a Ministry guided by the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), this innovation complements our existing Visa structure while enhancing all Visa-related services from end-to-end. As a government, we firmly believe in striking a balance between promoting economic growth, tourism, and national security.”

The automation of Nigeria’s e-visa process is expected to facilitate smoother entry for international visitors while reinforcing security measures and supporting economic growth.
