Washington, DC has welcomed a major new cultural attraction with the opening of the National Geographic Museum of Exploration, a first-of-its-kind museum that combines immersive storytelling, interactive technology and National Geographic’s iconic photography to celebrate exploration and discovery.
Opened on June 26, 2026, the museum is housed within the revitalised headquarters of the National Geographic Society and adds a new dimension to Washington, DC’s renowned collection of museums and cultural institutions.
Spanning more than 100,000 square feet, the museum features interactive galleries, immersive environments and public spaces designed to place visitors at the heart of some of the world’s most extraordinary expeditions. Drawing on more than 135 years of National Geographic exploration, the attraction showcases the people, places and discoveries that have shaped humanity’s understanding of the planet.
Among its key attractions is Photo Ark: Animals of Earth, an immersive exhibition inspired by National Geographic Explorer Joel Sartore’s global conservation project. Visitors can also experience Rolex Explorers Landing, which takes guests on journeys from the deepest oceans to outer space through the stories of National Geographic Explorers.
The museum also offers access to the Society’s archives, interactive exhibits combining physical artefacts with augmented reality, and a 400-seat immersive theatre that transports audiences to some of the world’s most spectacular landscapes.
Beyond its exhibition spaces, the reimagined campus includes an open-air courtyard featuring large-scale projection mapping and multimedia experiences after dark, as well as Explorers Eatery, a globally inspired restaurant celebrating cuisines from around the world. Together, these additions create a full-day visitor experience that extends beyond a traditional museum visit.
Located close to the White House, Dupont Circle and Embassy Row, the museum complements Washington, DC’s existing attractions, including the Smithsonian museums and the National Mall. The new attraction is expected to further enhance the city’s appeal during the upcoming America250 commemorations and beyond.
Designed to be accessible for all visitors, the museum incorporates multilingual content, tactile exhibits, Braille, American Sign Language interpretation and captioning.
