Micato Safaris targets new market direction in India

Micato Safaris has built a reputation as a service-driven luxury safari operator over the past six decades. Founded in Africa by the Pinto family, Micato is family-run. After decades of inbound expertise, Micato is now actively exploring India as an outbound source market. Sean Walwyn, Chief Executive Officer, Micato Safaris, shares the brand vision of introducing Indian travellers to personalised, immersive safari experiences while developing the market in a measured, service-led way rather than prioritising rapid scale.

The company was envisioned by Jane Pinto and Felix Pinto, building on a family history shaped by migration between India and Africa: Felix and Jane Pinto’s parents immigrated to Kenya from Goa during the British Raj. During her travels as Kenya’s national table tennis champion, Jane met people eager to visit the continent, which inspired her to launch a travel business. That personal, hands‑on approach to welcoming guests became foundational to Micato’s culture and continues to shape how the company operates today.

Initial Operations

After a career in corporate banking, Dennis Pinto, Felix and Jane’s son, built the company’s American operations, expanding the brand into the U.S. luxury travel market and later into South America and the Caribbean. Tracing this history, Sean says, “Today Micato Safaris operates across India, East Africa, and Southern Africa, with East Africa as the heritage and operational hub, while the other regions serve complementary luxury markets. The company began as a small, referral-driven enterprise, where hands-on service of greeting guests and accompanying safaris established a culture of personalised travel that continues to date, with 90-year-old Jane Pinto still welcoming her guests.”

During the 1990s, Micato Safaris managed high-volume cruise operations in East Africa, providing ground services for major cruise lines. This expertise enabled expansion into Southern Africa and India, initially linked to cruise itineraries. Micato India was founded more than three decades ago by Dennis Pinto and his close friend Cecil Haidar Ali, with an office in Mumbai and Cochin to handle cruise and ground operations. Cecil Haidar Ali played a key role in setting up the operation, which continues under the stewardship of Cecil’s children, Michael Haidar Ali and Lisa Alam Shah. Over time, the India business evolved beyond cruise services into a full‑service luxury travel operation.

The cruise business now accounts for a smaller share of operations, while inbound travel and FIT programmes from markets such as the United States have grown. Travellers who experienced the company’s services in Africa often choose multi-destination journeys that include India, reinforcing the brand’s luxury travel model and cross-destination opportunities. India today is positioned not simply as an operational extension, but as a destination where Micato applies the same service standards, in‑country staffing, and hands‑on oversight that define its African safaris.

A Service-Led Approach

Micato Safaris focuses on service-led travel in two destinations where it has deep knowledge: Africa remains Micato’s heritage and operational hub, and for roughly three decades, the company has also offered luxury journeys in India, applying the same service‑first philosophy. Sean notes, “Service defines Micato safaris. Guests arriving in Nairobi are cared for from the moment they arrive by a Micato Safari Director and a concierge team who manage transfers, check-in, and day-to-day coordination. Various safari categories are available to suit guest preferences. Experiences such as city tours, museum visits, and wildlife visits are planned with flexibility, offering set departures, tailor-made journeys, or private programmes, depending on guest preferences. Logistics teams resolve issues on the ground immediately, as addressing problems early protects the experience.”

A similar approach underpins Micato’s India journeys, which are led by full‑time, India‑based Micato Travel Directors and supported by local operations teams, allowing for a high degree of control, responsiveness, and personalisation throughout each journey.

The Indian Market

The Indian market is a new growth opportunity for Micato Safaris. The company is now exploring outbound journeys from India to African destinations, expanding beyond its traditional focus on inbound travel. The strategy is measured and service-led, introducing high-net-worth Indian travellers to longer, immersive safari experiences that reflect the brand’s personalised approach. Rather than treating India as a volume-driven source market, Micato is prioritising long-term relationships and a careful introduction to a unique safari culture.

India is evolving from an operational connection into a strategic market, with efforts to educate travellers about safari culture and experiential journeys. Sean Walwyn highlights that Indian travellers increasingly value service and longer itineraries over short visits. He notes, “The company is learning the market through collaboration with travel advisors and local professionals in its India office to understand guest expectations and cultural preferences. High-net-worth travellers remain a priority segment, with programmes tailored for multi-generational and personalised experiences.”

Sean looks forward to engaging with the Indian travel trade to expand Micato’s vision further, bringing to the Indian outbound market the same service ethos, family‑led culture, and in‑country presence that have long defined the Micato brand, particularly in Africa.
