The Union Cabinet of India, chaired by Narendra Modi, has approved the declaration of Madurai Airport as an international airport, marking a significant milestone in Tamil Nadu’s aviation development.

Located in the temple city of Madurai, the airport is among the oldest in the state and serves as an important gateway to southern Tamil Nadu. The upgrade to international status is expected to strengthen connectivity for tourism, pilgrimage and trade while supporting regional economic growth.

Madurai is home to the iconic Meenakshi Amman Temple, one of India’s most prominent pilgrimage sites, which attracts devotees and visitors from across the world. Improved international connectivity is expected to facilitate easier access for global travellers visiting the temple and other cultural attractions in the region.

The decision is also expected to enhance the airport’s ability to attract international traffic, promote trade and support business linkages, further positioning Madurai as an important aviation hub for southern Tamil Nadu.

With the elevation of Madurai Airport to international status, the government aims to strengthen regional connectivity and contribute to the broader expansion of India’s aviation network while supporting tourism and economic development in the region.
