In a move to safeguard its immigration system and ensure compliance among tourists, Indonesia has introduced stringent new visa regulations, significantly increasing penalties for immigration law violations. Offences that previously carried sentences of up to one year can now result in imprisonment for up to 20 years. This includes visa violations, which formerly led to sentences ranging from six months to one year but will now face harsher consequences under the new rules.
The regulation overhaul highlights Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening its immigration controls. As part of these efforts, the Indonesian Department of Immigration has launched ‘Operation Jagratara,’ specifically designed to enforce visa regulations and curb unlawful activities among foreign visitors.
Silmy Karim, Director General of Immigration, explained that the initiative was born from the growing number of foreigners, particularly in tourism and investment. He emphasized the need for intensified supervision to ensure all newcomers adhere to immigration laws, aiming to attract “quality crossers.”
To support the operation, the Directorate of Immigration Supervision and Enforcement has instructed immigration offices throughout the country to be on high alert. Supervision efforts will prioritize security stability and risk mitigation, enabling authorities to act swiftly against foreigners suspected of breaching immigration laws. Officers will have the authority to take immediate action, ensuring that violations are dealt with in accordance with the law.
Karim noted that while the new regulations target unlawful visitors, they are intended to maintain Indonesia as a welcoming destination for law-abiding tourists and investors.
The new regulations will not affect law-abiding tourists who follow the country’s visa rules, such as utilizing the standard 30-day or 60-day visa extensions.
