The Embassy of India in Mexico has issued an advisory on February 23, 2026, urging Indian nationals in certain regions of Mexico to exercise heightened caution amid ongoing security operations, road blockages, and reports of criminal activity.
The advisory follows a major security operation carried out by Mexican authorities on 22 February 2026 against Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The operation reportedly resulted in his death, triggering retaliatory violence, including vehicle burnings, highway blockades, and clashes with security forces across multiple states.
In light of the evolving situation, Indian nationals in Jalisco State, including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara, as well as in Tamaulipas State (including Reynosa and other municipalities), parts of Michoacán State, Guerrero State, and Nuevo León State, have been advised to shelter in place until further notice.
The embassy has urged citizens to avoid areas where law enforcement activity is underway, remain vigilant about their surroundings, and minimise unnecessary movement outside their place of residence or shelter. Nationals have also been advised to avoid crowds, monitor local media for updates, and strictly follow directions issued by local authorities.
In case of emergencies, individuals are advised to dial 911. The embassy has further requested Indian nationals to keep family and friends informed of their location and well-being through phone calls, text messages, or social media.
For assistance, Indian nationals may contact the Embassy of India in Mexico at +52 55 4847 7539.
