Helicopter flights in Khumbu to continue with park approval

Everest Helicopter flights

The Sagarmatha National Park has granted permission for helicopter flights in the Khumbu region, ensuring operations continue without affecting forests, wildlife, and biodiversity. This decision follows a previous directive by the park and local authorities to halt commercial flights starting January 1, 2025.

The initial restrictions, aimed at minimizing environmental impacts, allowed only essential flights. However, helicopter operators suspended all flights, citing security concerns, leading to disruptions in rescue operations, tourism, and other critical services.

On Monday, the Solukhumbu District Administration expressed concern over red flags placed at heliports in the region, highlighting operational challenges. The administration warned of strict legal action against any disruptions to regulated helicopter services.

The revised decision allows essential flights with proper authorization, addressing the operators’ concerns. Helicopter flights are vital for medical emergencies, disaster response, and tourism promotion in the remote Himalayan region.

The compromise ensures balanced operations, safeguarding both environmental integrity and the region’s reliance on helicopter services. The local administration emphasized adherence to rules, warning against any misuse of permissions.

This decision comes as part of broader discussions on managing the Khumbu region’s unique challenges, including environmental conservation and sustainable development.
