Hamad International Airport and Qatar Airways launch biometric ‘Fast Pass’ across passenger journey

Hamad International Airport and Qatar Airways launch biometric 'Fast Pass'

Passengers departing from Hamad International Airport (HIA) can now complete their airport journey, from check-in and baggage drop to security clearance and boarding, using facial recognition instead of a boarding pass. HIA, in partnership with Qatar Airways and technology provider SITA, has launched Fast Pass, one of the largest biometric passenger processing rollouts in the Middle East and globally, connecting more than 700 touchpoints into a unified biometric travel experience.

Powered by SITA’s technology, Fast Pass allows passengers to enrol once through the Qatar Airways mobile check-in application or at a self-service kiosk at the airport. The enrolment process takes only a few seconds, after which a passenger’s face becomes their boarding credential throughout the departure journey.

Following enrolment, passengers can check in, drop their baggage, clear security and board their flight using facial recognition, eliminating the need to present a boarding pass at multiple checkpoints. SITA’s self-service baggage drop units use the same biometric verification technology, supported by infrastructure designed with robust security and data protection standards, allowing passengers to retain control of their personal identity information.

Participation in Fast Pass is voluntary, with conventional processing remaining available for passengers who prefer not to use biometric identification. Airport staff are also available to assist travellers throughout the process.

In the next phase, Qatar Airways transfer passengers will also be able to use Fast Pass. The service is expected to be extended to other airlines operating from Hamad International Airport, enabling smoother flight connections and a more consistent passenger experience across the airport.

HIA also plans to expand the service beyond the airport by introducing additional mobile enrolment and verification touchpoints over time.

The rollout comes as airports worldwide handle rising passenger volumes while seeking to improve efficiency. According to research by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), most travellers now prefer biometric identification over physical travel documents.

By verifying passengers once and recognising them throughout their airport journey, airports can reduce queues, streamline passenger processing and improve operational efficiency.

Commenting on the launch, Selim Bouri, President, Middle East, Africa & Türkiye, SITA, said, “The way people move through airports is changing, and trusted digital identity is at the center of it. When a passenger is verified once and recognized across the whole journey, the airport runs more smoothly and the traveler stays in control of their data. Hamad International Airport has shown what that looks like at full scale, across every major touchpoint. This is the model the industry will build on: travel that is faster and simpler because it is built on trust.”

With Fast Pass, passengers can complete their airport journey with minimal interruptions, dropping bags, clearing security and boarding simply by looking at a camera.
