Germany has officially lifted the airport transit visa requirement for Indian nationals travelling through German airports to third countries, further strengthening travel facilitation and bilateral ties between Germany and India.

The decision was announced in the Federal Law Gazette (Bundesgesetzblatt) on June 2, 2026, and came into effect on June 3, 2026.

According to the announcement, Indian citizens will no longer require an airport transit visa while transiting through German airports en route to another international destination.

The move follows discussions during German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to India from January 12 to 13, 2026, during which Germany had indicated its intention to ease transit requirements for Indian travellers.

The development is expected to improve travel convenience for Indian passengers using German airports as transit hubs for onward international connections.

The press note stated the decision reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening German-Indian relations, facilitating smoother movement of people and further deepening economic and travel ties between the two countries.
