The German Foreign Ministry launched its Consular Services Portal, enabling global online visa applications on January 1, 2025. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock described the initiative as “a real administrative revolution” aimed at streamlining the process for individuals seeking to work, study, or reunite with family in Germany.
With 28 categories of national visas now accessible online, the digital platform represents a significant leap in modernising immigration procedures. “Every year, Germany is short of at least 400,000 skilled workers,” Baerbock said in a press release. “At times like these, we cannot afford to put the best off coming here to roll up their sleeves because of long paper application forms and even longer waiting periods.”
The platform’s implementation follows over two years of preparation, starting with pilot projects at three visa sections. Now available across all 167 German visa offices worldwide, the system eliminates the need for physical document submissions, expediting processes for applicants.
“From now on, [the Consular Services Portal] will be available at all 167 of Germany’s visa sections worldwide, providing digital services,” Baerbock added. “We are now at last bringing Europe’s most modern immigration law into the digital era.”
The Foreign Ministry emphasised the portal’s potential to strengthen Germany’s position as a global economic hub. The shift to online applications benefits both individuals and businesses, reducing logistical hurdles and cutting waiting times for appointments.
The portal’s phased rollout included pilot testing and incremental integration of visa sections. The platform currently supports applications for employment, studies, training, and family reunification. Future updates aim to allow families, groups, and authorised representatives to submit joint applications, further enhancing accessibility.
