The Gangtok Police have introduced enhanced winter safety measures at the Sherathang Check Post for the well-being of both tourists and residents as visitor numbers to the region’s snowy landscapes continue to grow.
Under the updated guidelines, vehicles traveling in the area must be equipped with snow-clearing tools, such as shovels, and must install tyre chains to reduce the risk of skidding on icy roads. These measures are intended to address safety challenges on the region’s mountainous routes, which become particularly hazardous during the winter season.
Vehicles are required to cross the 3rd Mile Check Post no later than 10:30 am and return by 5:00 pm, a precaution designed to avoid the risk of tourists being stranded in deteriorating conditions after dark.
Additionally, all vehicles must now obtain permits in advance, replacing the previously more lenient process. Waste management has also been emphasised, with vehicles mandated to carry dustbins or trash bags to help preserve the natural beauty of the area.
The introduction of these safety protocols comes as Gangtok experiences a surge in visitors drawn to its winter attractions, especially the opportunity to enjoy its snow-covered landscapes.
