Fraport has officially suspended all passenger operations at Frankfurt Airport’s Terminal 2 from June 9, 2026, as part of a long-planned modernisation and renovation programme. The move follows the recent opening of Terminal 3, which has provided the additional capacity required to temporarily close Terminal 2 and undertake extensive infrastructure upgrades.
Opened in 1994, Terminal 2 has been in continuous operation for more than three decades and is now set to undergo a comprehensive overhaul of its technical and operational systems. Airlines previously operating from Terminal 2 have already relocated to Terminal 3 in phases. Key infrastructure, including apron positions, baggage systems, the underground parking facility and the Sky Line people mover, will remain operational throughout the project.
The modernisation programme will include upgrades to fire safety and smoke extraction systems, energy infrastructure, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, building automation, elevators, escalators, sanitary facilities and office spaces. Fraport also plans to redesign terminal processes to improve operational efficiency, including the centralisation of security screening checkpoints, optimisation of passenger flows and more flexible use of retail areas.
Fraport AG expects to invest approximately €1.5 billion in the project.

After Terminal 2 has been modernized, it will be a central component of our future hub system, with state-of-the-art processes, greater flexibility and a significantly improved travel experience for our passengers.”
Preparatory work for the redevelopment will begin immediately, with more than three years allocated for detailed planning. Major construction activities are currently scheduled to commence in 2030.
Fraport expects Terminal 2 to reopen in the mid-2030s with the capacity to handle more than 10 million passengers annually, supporting future growth opportunities for Star Alliance carriers and other airline partners operating through Frankfurt Airport.
