Embassy of India in Seoul issues advisory for Indian Nationals travelling to Jeju Island

Jeju Island
Jeju Island

The Embassy of India in Seoul has issued an advisory for Indian nationals planning to travel to Jeju Island in the Republic of Korea under the visa waiver scheme, following reports of inconvenience, denial of entry, and repatriation upon arrival at Jeju International Airport.

The advisory clarifies that entry under the Jeju visa-free facility is permitted strictly for short-term tourism and that final admission into the Republic of Korea rests solely with immigration authorities at Jeju International Airport, in accordance with Korean law. The visa waiver scheme does not guarantee entry.

Mandatory Documents to Carry

Indian travellers are advised to carry printed copies, not just digital screenshots of the following

  • Confirmed return air ticket
  • Hotel reservation covering entire stay
  • Detailed travel itinerary (day-wise plan)
  • Proof of sufficient funds (recent bank statements / international cards / forex)
  • Passport valid for at least 6 months
  • Travel insurance (strongly recommended)
  • Contact details of accommodation

Financial Preparedness and Immigration Interview

The Embassy has further advised travellers to demonstrate adequate financial capacity for daily expenses, accommodation, and transportation during their stay. Immigration officers may conduct interviews upon arrival, and visitors are urged to respond clearly, truthfully, and consistently while remaining calm and cooperative. Inability to satisfy immigration queries may result in refusal of entry.

No Travel to Mainland Korea Under Jeju Waiver

The advisory also highlights that the Jeju visa waiver does not permit travel to mainland Korea. Attempting to travel to the mainland without a valid visa is illegal, and overstaying or engaging in unauthorised activities could lead to future travel bans.

Procedure in Case of Entry Refusal

In the event of entry refusal, passengers will be returned on the next available flight of the same airline and may be required to stay temporarily in a holding facility, depending on flight schedules.

Embassy Assistance

The Embassy stated that it cannot overturn decisions made by the Republic of Korea immigration authorities but will seek reasonable support for Indian nationals in holding facilities, if required. Travellers facing immigration-related issues may contact the Consular Wing of the Embassy during office hours at +82-2-792-4257 (Ext. 407) or via email at cons.seoul@mea.gov.in. An emergency contact number, 010-9356-4188, is available for assistance outside office hours, including weekends and holidays.
