NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has partnered with ACLEDA Bank Plc. to launch Unified Payments Interface (UPI) acceptance in Cambodia, marking a significant milestone in cross-border digital payments between the two countries.
The service was officially launched during a ceremony in Phnom Penh attended by H.E. Dr. Chea Serey, Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC), along with senior representatives from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The launch marks the completion of Phase 1 of a cross-border QR payment linkage between India and Cambodia through Bakong’s KHQR, Cambodia’s national QR code system.
Under the first phase, Indian travellers visiting Cambodia can make seamless QR-based payments at more than 4.5 million merchants across the country using UPI-enabled applications. The initiative aims to enhance payment convenience for travellers while supporting digital commerce and financial connectivity between the two nations.
The partnership is designed to evolve into a fully interoperable two-way payment corridor. In the next phase, Cambodian travellers visiting India will be able to use their domestic banking and digital payment applications to scan and pay through UPI QR codes across India using Bakong’s KHQR network.
The initiative is expected to deliver multiple benefits, including greater convenience for travellers by reducing reliance on cash and currency exchange, while enabling Cambodian merchants to access a growing base of Indian visitors. It is also expected to improve operational efficiency for businesses through secure, real-time digital transactions and streamlined cash management.
With Cambodia joining the network, UPI is now accepted in nine countries worldwide, including Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Bhutan, Qatar and Sri Lanka. The expansion further strengthens India’s efforts to build a globally connected digital payments ecosystem and facilitate seamless cross-border transactions for travellers and businesses alike.
