As the Baptism Site in Jordan celebrates the lighting of the Christmas Tree amidst an atmosphere of joy and peace, the Most Reverend Anil Joseph Thomas Couto, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Delhi, alongside Rev. Gershombhai Khristi, Auxiliary Secretary of the North West India Auxiliary and Allahabad Auxiliary Bible Society of India, joined the celebrations as representatives from India, marking their visit to the Holy Land from December 16-19, 2024. Their journey focused on exploring Jordan’s deeply rooted biblical heritage, reaffirming its status as a key destination for Christian pilgrimage.
Archbishop of DelhiThe delegation’s spiritual journey comprised a visit to Bethany Beyond the Jordan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where it is believed that Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. The group attended Mass at this sacred site, connecting to its profound spiritual history, before moving on to Mount Nebo, where Moses is said to have viewed the Land of Canaan. Standing at the Memorial Church of Moses. Here, the group reflected on the panoramic views of the Holy Land, contemplating the timeless promises of faith.
“To stand at the site where Jesus was baptized is a powerful reminder of the deep roots our faith has in this land,” Archbishop Couto shared. “Mount Nebo is a place where the past, present, and future converge,” he added, reflecting on the humbling experience of being at the spot where Moses saw the Promised Land.
The rest of their journey comprised a visit to St. George’s Church in Madaba, renowned for its 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land, which provides insight into the region’s rich Christian heritage. The group also attended the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at Mukawir, a historic site linked to John the Baptist’s beheading at King Herod’s palace (Mukawir Palace), where they reflected on the significance of the season.
The delegation’s tour also included visits to Ajloun, home to the historic Ajloun Castle; Tall Mar Elias, the home of Prophet Elijah; Indian Embassy and Vatican Embassy in Amman. Additionally, they attended Mass at Latin Patriarchate, Prayer and Blessings with the children at Our Lady of the Mount Church in Anjara and partook in lunch at the Church. The pilgrimage concluded with a meaningful ecumenical dialogue at the Latin Patriarchate of Amman, promoting unity among Christian denominations.

Reflecting on the visit, Archbishop Couto expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to visit these sacred sites, emphasizing the importance of unity among Christian communities.
“This journey has not only allowed us to connect with the roots of our faith but also to experience the warmth and hospitality of Jordan,” he said.
The visit reinforces the spiritual connection between India and Jordan, offering a profound opportunity for cultural and religious exchange.

Holy Land tours attract a sizable number of pilgrims and tourists from across the world, including India. With strong relations, JTB hopes these pilgrims will set aside more days to explore the other heritage sites within the country that link the two ancient cultures.
