American Cruise Lines has announced the launch of three brand-new Great Lakes itineraries for the 2026 cruise season, marking the company’s first foray into the growing Great Lakes market. The cruises will operate aboard American Patriot, the country’s newest small cruise ship, and run from May through August 2026.
“Guests have long asked for our style of cruising on the Great Lakes,” said Charles B. Robertson, President & CEO of American Cruise Lines. “We are now proud to offer these cruises as only American can, aboard a new small ship sailing 100% domestically.”
This development represents the first time in decades that an American-flagged ship will operate exclusively domestic cruises on the Great Lakes. Unlike international cruise lines, American Cruise Lines can dock directly in small towns, city parks, and private marinas, offering travellers an authentic and exclusive experience without crossing borders.
The 2026 Great Lakes season will feature two nine-day itineraries and one signature 14-day journey:
9-Day Great Lakes & Thousand Islands: Sailing between Syracuse, New York, and Cleveland, Ohio, this itinerary explores Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. Highlights include Boldt Castle, Niagara Falls, Amish Country, and Cleveland’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
9-Day Lake Michigan & Upper Peninsula: Round-trip from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the itinerary includes visits to the Fayette Historic Townsite, Escanaba, Green Bay, Muskegon, and the Harley-Davidson Museum.
14-Day American Great Lakes: Sailing between Cleveland, Ohio, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this itinerary spans Lakes Erie, Huron, and Michigan. Highlights include Detroit’s cultural landmarks, Mackinac Island, Silver Lake Sand Dunes, and the Meijer Botanical Gardens.
American Patriot is fully stabilised and accommodates 130 guests. The vessel features private balcony staterooms, suites, and single cabins available without supplement. Onboard amenities include spacious lounges, a top-deck walking track, a main restaurant with panoramic views, a café, chart room, fitness centre, laundry facilities, and elevators serving all decks.
All itineraries include a pre-cruise hotel stay and complimentary domestic airfare. Guests will enjoy daily guided excursions, onboard enrichment, fine cuisine, Wi-Fi, and gratuities included in the fare. By operating entirely within U.S. waters, the cruises eliminate the need for passports or international flights.
