An Air India flight from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport to London Gatwick, carrying 242 passengers and crew, crashed in the Meghaninagar area near the airport this afternoon, prompting large-scale rescue operations.
Air India has officially confirmed that Flight AI171, operated by a Boeing 787-8 aircraft, was involved in an accident shortly after takeoff. The flight departed from Ahmedabad at 13:38 IST and was bound for London Gatwick. Onboard were 242 individuals, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian, and seven Portuguese nationals.
While the exact number of fatalities remains unconfirmed, several injured passengers have been transported to nearby hospitals. Investigations are underway, and authorities will examine all possible factors, including aircraft systems, crew actions, air traffic control, and ground infrastructure.
The airline has set up a dedicated passenger information hotline at 1800 5691 444 to provide updates and support to families. Air India is also cooperating fully with investigating agencies.
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Flight AI171 took off from Runway 23 at 1:39 PM IST (08:09 UTC). Shortly after departure, the pilots issued a “MAYDAY” distress call to air traffic control. No further communication was received before the aircraft crashed outside the airport perimeter. “The aircraft, immediately after departure from Runway 23, fell on the ground outside the airport perimeter. “Heavy black smoke was seen coming from the accident site,” the DGCA noted.
The DGCA also shared that the aircraft was under the command of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a Line Training Captain (LTC) with 8,200 hours of flying experience, and First Officer Clive Kundar, who had logged 1,100 hours.
